Marina Kloppers gesê: “Tonight I am God.”

Charise de Wit (22), ’n vriendin, in Mayville, Pretoria, gery.

Daar het ’n verpleegster bloed by De Wit getrek.

“Ek sal dit nooit in my lewe vergeet nie.”

Toe hulle uiteindelik by haar kom, was sy in ’n diabetiese koma.

Mnr.

Me.

“Adjudication by an armed authority appears to be the most effective general violence-reduction technique ever invented. Though we debate whether tweaks in criminal policy, such as executing murderers versus locking them up for life, can reduce violence by a few percentage points, there can be no debate on the massive effects of having a criminal justice system as opposed to living in anarchy. The shockingly high homicide rates of pre-state societies, with to 10 to 60 percent of men dying at the hands of other men, provide one kind of evidence. Another is the emergence of a violent culture of honour in just about any corner of the world that is beyond the reach of the law. Many historians argue that people acquiesced to centralized authorities during the Middle Ages and other periods to relieve themselves of the burden of having to retaliate against those who would harm them and their kin. And the growth of those authorities may explain the hundredfold decline in homicide rates in European societies since the Middle Ages. The United States saw a dramatic reduction in urban crime rates from the first half of the nineteenth century to the second half, which coincided with the formation of professional police forces in the cities. The causes of the decline in American crime in the 1990s are controversial and probably multifarious, but many criminologists trace it in part to more intensive community policing and higher incarceration rates of violent criminals.

“The inverse is true as well. When law enforcement vanishes, all manner of violence breaks out: looting, settling old scores, ethnic cleansing, and petty warfare among gangs, warlords, and mafias. This was obvious in the remnants of Yugoslavia, the Soviet Union, and parts of Africa in the 1990s, but can also happen in countries with a long tradition of civility. As a young teenager in proudly peaceable Canada during the romantic 1960s, I was a true believer in Bakunin’s anarchism. I laughed off my parents’ argument that if government ever laid down its arms all hell would break loose. Our competing predictions were put to the test at 8:00 A.M. on October 17, 1969, when the Montreal police went on strike. By 11:20 A.M. the first bank was robbed. By noon most downtown stores had closed because of looting. Within a few more hours, taxi drivers burned down a garage of a limousine service that had competed with them for airport costumers, a rooftop sniper killed a provincial police officer, rioters broke into several hotels and restaurants, and a doctor slew a burglar in his suburban home. By the end of the day, six banks had been robbed, a hundred shops had been looted, twelve fires had been set, forty carloads of storefront glass had been broken, and three million dollars in property damage had been inflicted, before city authorities had to call in the army and, of course, the Mounties to restore order. This decisive empirical test left my politics in tatters (and offered a foretaste of life as a scientist).”

    Savage, lees bietjie hier:

    http://freakonomicsbook.com/freakonomics/chapter-excerpts/chapter-4/

“Perhaps the most dramatic effect of legalized abortion, and one that would take years to reveal itself, was its impact on crime.

In the early 1990s, just as the first cohort of children born after Roe v. Wade was hitting its late teen years—the years during which young men enter their criminal prime—the rate of crime began to fall. What this cohort was missing, of course, were the children who stood the greatest chance of becoming criminals. And the crime rate continued to fall as an entire generation came of age minus the children whose mothers had not wanted to bring a child into the world. Legalized abortion led to less unwantedness; unwantedness leads to high crime; legalized abortion, therefore, led to less crime.”

“In New York, California, Washington, Alaska, and Hawaii, a woman had been able to obtain a legal abortion for at least two years before Roe v. Wade. And indeed, those early-legalizing states saw crime begin to fall earlier than the other forty-five states and the District of Columbia. Between 1988 and 1994, violent crime in the earlylegalizing states fell 13 percent compared to the other states; between 1994 and 1997, their murder rates fell 23 percent more than those of the other states.

But what if those early legalizers simply got lucky? What else might we look for in the data to establish an abortion-crime link? One factor to look for would be a correlation between each state’s abortion rate and its crime rate. Sure enough, the states with the highest abortion rates in the 1970s experienced the greatest crime drops in the 1990s, while states with low abortion rates experienced smaller crime drops. (This correlation exists even when controlling for a variety of factors that influence crime: a state’s level of incarceration, number of police, and its economic situation.) Since 1985, states with high abortion rates have experienced a roughly 30 percent drop in crime relative to low-abortion states. (New York City had high abortion rates and lay within an early-legalizing state, a pair of facts that further dampen the claim that innovative policing caused the crime drop.) Moreover, there was no link between a given state’s abortion rate and its crime rate before the late 1980s—when the first cohort affected by legalized abortion was reaching its criminal prime—which is yet another indication that Roe v. Wade was indeed the event that tipped the crime scale.”

  4. Very interesting indeed, McBrolloks. I read a few years ago (I think it was in “Atlantic”), that if Roe vs Wade ever got repealed (which was what the republican right-wingers were propagating then), Republicans would not have a US president for decades to come – the reasoning was that women had had enough of being told what was good for them and what was bad. What are the tea-baggers after for the coming presidential election – do they still want to repeal Roe vs Wade? Probably to fucking shit scared to say that now, but once they get a Republican president and control both houses, they might just do that.

  5. Yes Savage, the only people who can repeal Roe vs Wade is the Supreme Court. The president gets to nominate new justices when an existing one dies or retires. Right now it looks as if Roe vs Wade is going to stay for a long long time.

You are right. The right wingers don’t talk much about it during election campaigns, but right now they are, because they are in their primaries. It looks like an idiot convention when you watch these boobs try and debate certain issues. Right now they are all trying to win the religious vote, so all human rights go out the window. They believe America is a christian nation and the constitution was written with christian values and the government should govern according to christian laws. Basically, they long to live in the bronze age. These guys and gals have no idea what the USA constitution really means and stands for.

The Republican Party got hijacked by the Tea Party. So it is going to very very interesting to see who gets picked to run against Obama.

Bachmann or Palin? But before that happens I’m sure Jesus will interfere – He surely is not that malicious to allow the great USA get destroyed in only 4 years.
