Chilean priest probed after ‘stolen babies’ scandal
Father Joannon is a senior Roman Catholic priest in the Chilean capital, SantiagoA judge in Chile has barred a Catholic priest from leaving the country over claims he had pressured single women to give up their babies for adoption.
The ruling blocks a church recommendation that Father Gerardo Joannon, 77, go on retreat abroad.
He allegedly belonged to a network of clerics and doctors who gave the babies to married couples under the rule of Augusto Pinochet in the 1970s and ’80s.
This was done to avoid the social stigma of unmarried motherhood.
If the women resisted, they were told that their children had died during birth.
‘Fake funerals’
Father Joannon is a senior cleric at the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary in the Chilean capital, Santiago.
Following the allegations, his archdiocese suspended him and launched its own internal investigation.
This week, it concluded that he was involved in two “irregular adoptions”.
In both cases, the mothers were anaesthetised during labour and later told their babies had died.
In actual fact, the children had been given to other families, according to the investigation.
The church said Father Joannon knew they were alive but nevertheless conducted funeral masses for the children.
The church recommended he apologise to his victims and go to Madrid, Spain, “to initiate a process of psychological and spiritual accompaniment”.
The case is being investigated by Chilean Judge Mario Carroza who ordered the cleric to stay in Chile for at least two months while a police investigation continues.

On Gay Priests, Pope Francis Asks, ‘Who Am I to Judge?’
ROME — For generations, homosexuality has largely been a taboo topic for the Vatican, ignored altogether or treated as “an intrinsic moral evil,” in the words of the previous pope.
In that context, brief remarks by Pope Francis suggesting that he would not judge priests for their sexual orientation, made aboard the papal airplane on the way back from his first foreign trip, to Brazil, resonated through the church. Never veering from church doctrine opposing homosexuality, Francis did strike a more compassionate tone than that of his predecessors, some of whom had largely avoided even saying the more colloquial “gay.”
“If someone is gay and he searches for the Lord and has good will, who am I to judge?” Francis told reporters, speaking in Italian but using the English word “gay.”
Francis’s words could not have been more different from those of Benedict XVI, who in 2005 wrote that homosexuality was “a strong tendency ordered toward an intrinsic moral evil,” and an “objective disorder.” The church document said men with “deep-seated homosexual tendencies” should not become priests.
Vatican experts were quick to point out that Francis was not suggesting that the priests or anyone else should act on their homosexual tendencies, which the church considers a sin. But the fact that he made such comments — and used the word “gay” — was nevertheless revolutionary, and likely to generate significant discussion in local dioceses, where bishops are divided over whether to accept priests who are gay but celibate.
Francis also told reporters that while Pope John Paul II had definitively closed the door to female priests, he sought a “theology of women” and a greater role for them in Catholic life, news reports said.
Francis did not dodge a single question, even thanking the person who prompted his comments on homosexuality, asking about Italian news reports of a “gay lobby” inside the Vatican, with clerics blackmailing one another with information about sexual missteps.
“So much is written about the gay lobby. I have yet to find on a Vatican identity card the word ‘gay,’ ” Francis said, chuckling. “They say there are some gay people here. I think that when we encounter a gay person, we must make the distinction between the fact of a person being gay and the fact of a lobby, because lobbies are not good.”
An article in the Italian weekly L’Espresso this month alleged that one of the advisers that Francis had appointed to look into the Vatican Bank, Msgr. Battista Ricca, had been accused of having gay trysts when he was a Vatican diplomat in Uruguay. The pope told reporters that nothing in the documentation he had seen substantiated the reports.
He added that such a lobby would be an issue, but that he did not have anything against gay people and that their sins should be forgiven like those of all Catholics. Francis said that homosexuals should be treated with dignity, and that no one should be subjected to blackmail or pressure because of sexual orientation.
“The problem isn’t having this orientation. The problem is making a lobby,” he said.
In recent years, both Benedict and Francis have tried to make changes at the Vatican Bank so that it meets international anti-money-laundering norms that are a condition for using the euro.
Asked about the bank, Francis said, “Some say that it’s better to have a bank, others that it would be better to have a fund, still others say to close it.”

Holyshmoly some people will regard you as a racist. Politics and religion are the reasons that we are not moving forward. Being politically correct or religiously correct is much more in favour than being scientifically correct. Look at affirmative action it is purely based on politics. They are trying to “fix” the ” wrongs ” of the past by making the same mistakes the people made they hate so much. That is not being logic. That is being emmosional and then calling it politically correct. Look at what happened in South – Africa because of that way of thinking. Obviously it is completely absurd to argue that you are going to punish a racial groups individuals because of something that certain individuals in their race did years ago. N bietjie goeie nuus is dat die godiote tans die wind v voor kry met godsdiens in skole. Hulle sit tans met n taaie tameletjie want die konstitusie staan reglynig teenoor die manier waarop sekere beheerliggame godsdiens in skole beoefen. 40% Of the American population believes that the world is only 6000 years old. South Africans are probably far worse of than that. An international survey showed that Iceland has the highest proportion of people who believe in evolution and South Africa is the lowest. I saw again on facebook that one should not give technology to a group of illiterate Afrikaners. The far right wings are a bunch of barbaric uncivilised idiots. They are nothing better than left wing blacks. They are trying to fix a mistake with a mistake. Politics sucks! Religion also. Richard Dawkins also said that the world can do nothing with religion. Afrikaners can be a bunch of assholes. I fantasize about starting my own political party. One that has basically the same outlook as Richard Dawkins society for rational thinking. A political party who puts common sense first not emontional thinking. A party that can fix the social problems by working in a logical way. Create a South Africa where people have water ( Like they use to have all these years), have electricity ( Like they use to all these years), where there are jobs for people who work hard and have the will to empower themselves. Where houses are build, crime is handled the right way, where schoolkids are educated in the best way possible and they learn to think morally and logic and fair. All those can only be achieved through logical thinking not emotional thinking. I leave it up to your imagination to think why all this is not possible in South Africa.
