Cape Town – A MyCiti bus driver has been suspended after he disobeyed an instruction to not lead passengers in prayer.
“The driver, however, disobeyed the instruction and was given a written warning on Tuesday 10 November 2015,” said Herron.
TBRT informed the Transport for Cape Town that it had suspended the driver after he ignored the written warning and instructions on Wednesday.
Herron said the outcome of the case would only be known once a disciplinary hearing had been concluded.
“It is important for us all to acknowledge the fact that the residents of Cape Town and visitors to our city belong to different faiths, or that some of us may not be religious at all.
“I, therefore, want to make an appeal for tolerance and respect for each other and our right to choose which religion to practice, if any, and when and how we do so,” he said.
Herron said drivers wanting to “bless their journey” were asked to do so quietly in the cab of the MyCiti bus.
