Russell Brand tries to defend the existence of God with terrible arguments

Russell Brand has decided to take on Stephen Fry over the existence of God. And how did it go?

He should stick to comedy.

His philosophical arguments are simply uneducated and not well thought out. His previous videos about not-voting are asinine at best, and thankfully those smarter than him have shut down that argument. He simply does not have a track record of being a solid voice for any of his positions, yet he doesn’t shut up.

So in this new video, Brand wants to defend the existence of God against arguments against his existence made by Stephen Fry, yes, another comedian, but someone who has a track record of being scientifically literate and well educated in world religions.

So, Brand’s evidence?

Science cannot answer the “why” question. Why is that so important? It’s not actually, science answers the “how” questions which are much more meaningful in the grand scheme of things.

He also breaks out the “fine-tuning” argument, showing he may have just watched one too many John Lennox videos.

Biologist Jerry Coyne watched the 10-minute rant and had this to say,

“In other words, Brand’s tirade in this video is a mixture of Deepak Chopra and John Haught. Oh, and there’s a little atheist-bashing at 9:20 when Brand implies that atheists would have a hard time justifying helping their fellow humans, and that we must have some spirituality to “save the planet.””

I have seen some of Brand’s standup and thought he was pretty funny. But it is hard to hold respect for someone who keeps opening his mouth and spitting out words and arguments he just doesn’t understand.

You can watch the whole video below, though I can hardly recommend it.

    • Ahhh….. the power of editing! Thanks Holy!
I just learned something I will be applying for the rest of my life. I struggle with the languages, but writing on a blog has helped me get much better. Really the best practice for anyone is to write a lot. When I was a kid my dad had me write a page on a random subject everyday. It helped me improve enough to pass english. Once I got up to “standard” I could take a break. That was until I fell behind again, then it was back to the daily essays. All in all it really helped me. He would correct the mistakes when he got home from work. Then I had to rewrite the page. Then he would correct it again, point out the remaining mistakes and that would be it, until the new paper the next day. Repeat for several months.
